Fathi's EVS in Salzburg

My EVS Experience

Hello I’m Fatih Aktoprak, 24 years old, from Istanbul, Turkey.

I’ve always wondered about what it feels like living in a different culture. When some of my friends mentioned me about EVS, I just thought it is my thing. I’ve got to take my place in it. I started to research the projects for myself and found one. I was accepted to Kinderfreunde. It was also great ‘cause I love kids.

I arrived to Salzburg in September, it was colder comparatively Istanbul. But when I first saw Salzburg, it made me feel like I am in a fairytale. Because the city is really cute. I think Salzburg is the city everyone must see once in their lifespan.

I already could speak English when I went to Austria so it helped me a lot for the first days. Then I started to German course and tried to use the sentences I just learned at the class. When I encountered someone who couldn't speak English I also learned to express myself with my body language. It was also enjoyable but not always ? One month later it was better 'cause I could speak a little German. Learning new words and expressions in German was really enjoyable for me. I was always so into the languages and I think German is one of the most important languages for every aspect of areas.

During my EVS time, I learned Austrian lifestyle and tried to adapt myself as you will do. For instance, when I entered to somewhere I always used Gruss Gott or Servus.

I taught the children basic Turkish. For instance, how to count from 1 to 20 in Turkish. I cooked with them and played some traditional games with them.

I learned a different culture which I was not familiar before at all. I met lots of Austrian people and had conversations with them. I learned their traditions, lifestyle, history and music. I experienced the way they live.

EVS process hasn’t been always very easy for me. Especially the part of living together with the other people. But the problems are always temporary. Time always solves the issues.

My advices are, go to Hofer (the cheapest supermarket in Austria), travel a lot, contribute lots of things to your life, experience and live.

I think EVS is a lifetime experience that everyone must taste once, Best wishes and Good Luck with your EVS, Fatih.
